The 1719-A8 backplane is an Allen-Bradley backplane that is available from the Allen-Bradley 1719 Ex I/O series. This backplane or base chassis is one of the smallest backplanes that is available from the 1719 Ex I/O series because it only has 8 I/O slots. The 1719-A8 backplane also has only 1 power supply slot while the bigger 1719 Ex I/O series backplanes have more, and it has an Ethernet adapter slot for the Ethernet network. A label for the backplane can be attached to its special label carrier. The 1719-A8 backplane can host either 8 single-width I/O modules or 4 double-width I/O modules at a time.

The Allen-Bradley 1719-A8 is a base chassis for Distributed I/O Systems. This product is part of the Bulletin 1719 Ex I/O module system which is used to acquire digital and analog signals in the field in Ex-protected areas. In all Allen-Bradley industrial automation systems, backplanes are used to establish communication networks and to connect a power supply to the modules attached to it. These individual modules can be adapters, input or output signal acquisition modules, and power supplies. During the configuration of the remote I/O module system, users can put these modules in backplane slots. The Allen-Bradley 1719-A8 has 8 slots which can accommodate 8 one-slot modules or 4 double-slot modules.
The Allen-Bradley 1719-A8 has plastic isolating housing adapted for Ex surroundings. It is designed to make the installation of modules efficient, and it has a compact housing that can be fitted into 113 millimeters by 275 millimeters by 165 millimeters of space. The housing is easily mounted on a DIN rail. This base chassis is the smallest one available with only 8 backplane connections. If the users’ applications need more than 8 modules, they will have the option of extending the backplane with another chassis. All I/O modules on the extension chassis are controlled via the adapters installed on the 8-point base backplane. For the extension chassis, the users have to install an additional power supply. Although the insertion of the modules is allowed while the backplane is powered up, adding an extension chassis is not supported while the system is in the run mode.
