Not all Allen-Bradley systems that are rated at 5 kilowatts and 10 kilowatts need an external shunt resistor kit, but the ones that regularly handle large regenerative loads do, and so do Allen-Bradley 22-kilowatts rated 1394 and 8520 systems because they do not come with built-in shunt resistors. The external shunt resistor kit like the 1394-SR10A external shunt resistor kit will dissipate the excessive energy that would overload a system's internal resistor and possibly damage the internal resistor or the whole system.
