The Allen-Bradley 1397-A040R digital DC drive is a compact, regenerative drive from the 1397 series of DC drives. It has 230 Volts AC input voltage, 50/60 Hertz of input frequency, and 40 Horsepower of output power. Its armature voltage and current ratings are 240 Volts DC and 146 Amps, respectively. Its DC field voltage and current ratings are 150 Volts DC and 15 Amps, respectively. It has a 25,000 Amps short circuit rating. The drive may be run with either open-loop or closed-loop control. The closed-loop control of the drive requires an analog tachometer on the motor. The open-loop transient speed regulation of the drive is 1% with the analog tachometer.

The 1397-A040R DC drive also features a third user-configurable process control loop that can be used to regulate external process variables such as liquid levels and pressure. Its field terminations are easily accessible for quick installation and the drive has strategically located components to simplify the modification and maintenance processes. The drive comes with an open chassis construction by letting the users install it in a suitable enclosure. The 1397-A040R DC drive provides flexibility, a faster response time, and a compact design. If the drive is in an enclosed cabinet, use a closed-circuit heat exchanger to maintain the ambient inlet air temperature. The humidity around the drive must be kept between 5% and 95%, non-condensing. This drive must not be exposed to oils, corrosive vapors, and abrasive debris. The drive mounted HMI (Human-Machine Interface) can be accessed from the front of the drive for programming the drive and viewing the operating parameters.
