About 8520-3APA1

The Allen-Bradley 8520-3APA1 is the system module and the processor for the Allen-Bradley 9/440 3-axis CNC system. The 9/440 resolver–based CNC/Drive integrates a CNC module and a digital drive into 1 compact unit. This integration enables improved performance and at the same time leads to a reduction in cost, reduction in the time required for system integration, and reduction in the number of cables which are required to connect the various modules. The Allen-Bradley 9/440 3-axis CNC system can support 3 axis modules, 3 resolver feedback ports, and 2 analog outputs, but just 1 encoder feedback port. The 9/440 system contains the system and axis modules.


The 8520-3APA1 system module includes the following circuit boards in its system: (a) a CNC assembly, (b) a power assembly and (c) an assembly made of an interconnected power and CNC assembly. The 8520-3APA1’s CNC assembly has a processor board, I/O ports for connecting to the Allen-Bradley 9/Series fiber optic ring, to the serial ports (Ports A and B), to the emergency stop connection, to video connections, and to the feedback board to connect to1326 motor resolvers. The power assembly is responsible for supplying voltage to the 8520-3APA1 and the axis modules. The interconnected power and CNC assembly contain the wiring board that enables the interfacing of the CNC assembly with the power sections of the Allen-Bradley 9/440 system. The assembly’s axis modules are primarily responsible for the conversion of DC power - which is available from the output of the 8520-3APA1 system module - into an AC voltage which has controlled phase, controlled amplitude, and controlled frequency. This controlled AC voltage can then be applied to the regulation of the speed, the torque, and the direction of Allen-Bradley 1326 AC servomotors.
