The Allen-Bradley 8520-PS1A is a 9/Series Power supply, intended for use with CNC hardware. The CNC hardware is typically composed of the Control module, Servo Modules, Servo amplifier, motors and encoders. The 8520-PS1A connects and delivers power to the processor module via the P12 supply connector.
This power supply is designed for a rated input supply voltage of 115/230V, 50/60 Hz. with actual input voltage range of 90-265VAC, 47-63 Hz frequency. This module has a rated power consumption of 225 Watts @ 50 Deg. Celsius or 168 Watts @ 60°C or 225 Watts with min. 25 CFM. This module is provided with an 8A/250VAC fuse which functions to protect the power supply module and sub power supply, including the colored Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) Display. Incoming supply to the 8520-PS1A is made via the terminal block installed to the module’s front panel.
This power supply can be connected to the monochrome operator panel power supply. Connection is established via the ac power supply cable (C03) terminated to terminals AUX-AC L1 and L2 of terminal block BT04 on the main power supply to terminals L1 and L2 of terminal block BT02 on the operator panel power supply.
This power supply comes with a power supply indicator located on the upper left portion of the module. Beside this LED indicator is the fuse compartment which can be disengaged to check or replace the built-in fuse. This power supply also supports wiring of Normally Open (N.O.) Power ON switch and a Normally Closed (N.C.) Power OFF switch.
It is usually installed in the component enclosure of the machine. The 8520-PS1A digital servo amplifier is used to translate the low-level PWM signals from the input of the 8520-PS1A digital servo module to the specific power levels, as required for the driving of the motors. The current feedback for the machine is read from the current sensors of the 8520-PS1A device and its amplifier. The same information (feedback) is returned to the 8520-PS1A digital servo module. Then the received data to the 8520-PS1A digital servo module is processed by the servo module of the device towards maintaining a position of control and velocity, as per the AMP, module, and part program specifications. It is important to note that when using the solid trapping features that are available on the 9/290 and 9/260 CNC, the Allen Bradley 8510 AC spindle drive system must be used. Once the basic information such as position and velocity are obtained from the given feedback part of the 8520-PS1A device (usually mounted on top of the servo motor), the feedback device is used for generating differential signals. These signals are then fed to the 8520-PS1A digital servo module. If the given spindle motor makes use of an encoder, it will then give the feedback of the spindle position to the specialized 8520-PS1A digital servo module.
