About 8520-RIOM

The 8520-RIOM is a Remote I/O Module manufactured by Allen-Bradley. This I/O module is intended to be used with 9/Series CNC machine controllers. The 8520-RIOM is designed to be implemented exclusively for 9/260 controllers. This 9/Series communication module allows the 9/260 control to appear as a remote I/O rack to a PLC processor’s I/O scanner. The 8520-RIOM I/O module has the following interface components: RIO port LEDs, RIO port connectors, status LEDs, and RS232/422 port (not used). To operate this module correctly, first install it, make all necessary remote I/O communication connections on 1771 I/O network, configure it for the network in AMP, and write PAL (set $RMON parameter to true and manage input/output words). Note: the 8520-RIOM module cannot be used in a 9/260 system that already has an installed MMS/Ethernet communication module or a Data Highway Plus communication module. Only one of these three modules can operate at a time. The 8520-RIOM is installed by pushing the module in the component enclosure slot (first or second slot). To avoid the module damage, it is advised to wear an ESD wristband during the installation process. The wristband should be connected to the ground screw on the enclosure. PAL $RMON flag must be set TRUE for remote I/O connection to be enabled. Furthermore, some parameters must be programmed in AMP for the specific network I/O communications. When installing and configuring the 8520-RIOM successfully, RIO port LED “A” should be signaling solid green (port is configured and connected to the network), and status LED “ACT” should be solid green (module is actively linked to 9/Series CPU). Only port “A” is available on this remote I/O module, so the RIO port LED “B” is not used.
