The Allen-Bradley 8520-S5 is a Bulletin 8520 series 9/440 5kW CNC drive system module. This module is used as a member of Allen-Bradley manufactured CNC machine systems, which are designed for a build-up of milling and lathe machines. The series of 9/440 CNC system modules, such as the 8520-S5, support these systems by integration of CNC logical functions with drive functions. Thus, the 8520-S5 drive enables servo motor control and the machine’s multiple axis movements. Computer numeric controlled milling and lathe machines are used to manufacture a wide range of parts and after applying devices such as the 8520-S5 CNC system module, tooling costs for the machine’s manufacture become more reasonably priced. Allen-Bradley’s CNC machining centers are the ideal solution for prototyping, small production series of complex components as well as for serial production.
A three-phase 380 to 460 Volt AC voltage is supplied to the device inlet (6.5A input current). This CNC module at its output generates 530 to 680 Volts DC voltage and produces 5kW of power with 7.5A current rating. There is a 24 Volt AC/DC input voltage for control circuit supply. The key features of the 8520-S5 are a CNC interface, a fiber optic I/O ring for communication, control signals, and motor feedback. This product was designed by Allen-Bradley to be paired with the 1326 series servo motors. In this way, system integration time can be significantly lowered. The 8520-S5 5kW system module comes in an enclosure with dimensions of 150 x 279.4 x 400 millimeters x (5.91 x 11.0 x 15.75 inches). Allen Bradley recommends usage of 75 degree Celsius copper wires 3.3 millimeter2 (14 AWG) for terminal connection. The production of this CNC system module has been terminated.
