The Allen-Bradley 22-COMM-D is a PowerFlex 40 compatible communication adapter. This adapter is one of the supported communication adapter by the PowerFlex 40 which enables DeviceNet connectivity. It comes with Three (3) LED status indicators , 20-pin DSI connector, 5-pin DeviceNet connector, Node address selector switches and mode jumper for multi-drive operation.

The 22-COMM-D communication adapter supports single drive or multi drive operation. With Single drive operation, a single DeviceNet node consists of a single drive installed with One (1) 22-COMM-D adapter while multi-drive operation supports both PowerFlex 40 and PowerFlex 4 drives. The primary drive must be a PowerFlex 40 installed with a 22-COMM-D while the other drives must be connected in daisy-chain utilizing the integral RS485 communication interfaces of the consecutive drives. With a single drive operation. Up to One (1) drive per node is supported while for multi-drive operation, up to Five (5) drives per node may be configured.

With multi-drive communication, hardware cost is lowered as a single adapter may control up to 5 drives. It also reduces the node count as 30 drives connected in multi-drive configuration would only require Five (5) 22-COMM-D for a total of Six (6) nodes only compared to single drive operation where in Thirty (30) nodes will require Thirty (30) 22-COMM-D communication adapter.

For connection to a DeviceNet network, recommended cable is thin cable with an outside diameter of 6.9 mm (0.27 in.).

The component should be installed by a trained technician. Note that the module comes with a risk of injury or equipment damage if it is not used properly. If the DeviceNet adapter is transmitting control I/O to the drive, the drive might experience a fault after the resetting of the 22-COMM-D. The 22-COMM-D features up to 3 status indicators that report the operational status of the drive. The status of the machine can be viewed from the drive cover. The green light indicates that the drive is in normal operation. A flashing green light indicates that the adapter is establishing a connection to the drive. The light will turn red if the connection fails or solid green if the connectivity is solid. The 22-COMM-D also comes with a DeviceNet connector which is a 5-pin connector to which the 5-pin linear plug is connected. It also features a node address or a rate switch for setting the node address and also for setting the network data rate.
