The 842E-MIP3BA encoder from Allen-Bradley is a multi turn type of encoder that uses the Ethernet/IP network. It is part of the Allen-Bradley/Rockwell Automation 842 series of encoders. The 842E-MIP3BA Ethernet/IP encoder uses the Ethernet/IP network to communicate with the programmable controller that it is connected to. It features an embedded Ethernet/IP switch that can be used to connect it to other devices that use the Ethernet network in a series or in a topology like the DLR, star, and linear topologies. The 842E-MIP3BA Ethernet/IP network encoder is designed to be as compact as possible for efficiency and to conserve installation space. The ball bearings that are used in this encoder are spaced 30 millimeters or 1.18 inches apart to give them an extended operating life.
The Allen-Bradley 842E-MIP3BA multi turn Ethernet/IP encoder is able to determine the absolute position of a rotating motor shaft within multiple turns. It can be upgraded with CompactFLASH. The 842E-MIP3BA Ethernet/IP encoder functions as an I/O adapter in the Ethernet network that can send and receive both implicit and explicit messages in either a cyclic manner or on request. The implicit messages are used for real-time communication the encoder and the programmable logic controller or PLC that the encoder is connected to, while the explicit messages are used for communication between these devices that does not occur in real-time. If the 842E-MIP3BA Ethernet/IP encoder is used as part of DLR topology or a linear topology, Allen-Bradley does not recommend having more than 50 nodes at a time in either of these topologies.
