The Allen-Bradley 8500-1746I Adapter Interface is a solid-state, microprocessor-based, electronic card that has been designed and manufactured by Allen-Bradley to provide a communication pathway for the SLC-500 Programmable Logic Controllers or PLCs. This module is part of the 8500 Motors series. Remote input and output modules of different characteristics can be connected to the 8500-1746I Adapter Interface so they can communicate with the SLC-500 PLCs.

The Allen-Bradley 8500-1746I Adapter Interface Module from the 8500 Motors series is an essential communication device for applications that need to connect remotely located input or output signals to an SLC-500 Programmable Logic Controller or PLC. This module is a microcomputer that allows Allen-Bradley Bulletin 1746 SLC I/O Modules to be physically connected and to communicate effectively with the SLC-500 PLCs. The Allen-Bradley 8500-1746I Adapter Interface Module is easy to install in the SLC-500 backplane, and all that the users have to do is turn off the power, align the module with a free slot in the SLC-500 chassis backplane, and push the module down until it clicks into place. The current consumption rating of this adapter interface module is 470 milliamps when it is directly connected to the 5 Volts DC power source from the SLC-500 backplane. Its thermal dissipation rating is very low, at 2.49 Watts or 8.4962 BTU per hour.
The Allen-Bradley 8500-1746I Adapter Interface Module is able to withstand a maximum air temperature of 60 degrees Celsius (140 degrees Fahrenheit). If temperatures are expected to be higher than that, it is recommended to install forced ventilation systems for the interface module or to install a climate control device in the electrical enclosure that houses the PLC. The Allen-Bradley 8500-1746I Adapter Interface Module can be used as a connection point for external I/O modules which are generally located at a great distance from the PLC. The individual input and output signals from the Series 1746 SLC I/O Modules are processed in this interface device, which communicates at very high speed with the SLC-500 PLC in order to exchange control information with the field devices. The configuration of the interface module can be done by the final user with the same communication tools that are employed to program the PLC.
