The Allen-Bradley 1440-REX03-04RG XM-442 Voted EODS Relay Module is an electronic safety device that is used in applications where Overspeed protection is required according to American Petroleum Institute (API) standard 670 for “Machinery Protection Systems” and standard 612 for “Petroleum, Petrochemical, and Natural Gas Industries—Steam Turbines—Special-purpose Applications”. This module usually works in combination with three XM-220 modules, each one signaling a specific critical failure condition. When two out of three XM-220 signals are active, the Allen-Bradley 1440-REX03-04RG XM-442 Module will shut the application process down and simultaneously signal the failure by activating an alarm or notifying the operators. Note that this procedure is automatic and the users have no way to manually configure any of theparameters.

The advantage of having an Electronic Overspeed Detection System (EODS) with triple redundancy in gas and steam turbine driven machinery is that these types of devices can prevent catastrophic machine failures. The 1440-REX03-04RG XM-442 Module only needs an XM-946 terminal base unit catalog number 1440-TB-G for installation. The recommendation from Allen-Bradley is to first wire the XM-946 base unit and then install the XM-442 module. The approximate dimensions of the module are 97 x 94 x 94 millimeters (3.8 x 3.7 x 3.7 inches) It must always be installed indoors, preferably in a protected enclosure, to keep high temperatures and humidity away.
