The Allen-Bradley 1606-XLDC92D converter is a DC/DC converter from the 1606 series of switched-mode power supplies. The device is easily installed on a DIN rail and it provides 92 Watts of power at the output. The 1606-XLDC92D converter usually runs with a battery or similar power source connected to the input that is 24 Volts DC rated (it accepts 14.4 to 32.4 Volts DC voltage). It also provides 24 Volts DC at the output side, but this voltage is stable, with less than 50 mVpp of ripple. This is why this device is sometimes used to stabilize and refresh DC voltage at the end of long cables.
The Allen-Bradley 1606-XLDC92D converter has a soft start feature that drives the output current so that it slowly rises until it reaches its nominal value (3.8 Amps). This feature provides a long life to the converter by charging the external and internal capacitors slowly and avoiding high turn-on input currents. Although this feature increases the rise time of the output voltage slightly, it also increases the average time between failures to over 500,000 working hours. The input side of the 1606-XLDC92D converter is equipped with a bulk capacitor that acts like a small battery when the input voltage is removed or a voltage glitch happens. This capacitor keeps the output voltage alive for up to 14 milliseconds when there is no input power. There is a DC OK signaling LED lamp on the front side of the device to inform the users when the DC voltage at the output is at least 90% of its nominal level.
