The MVI56-GEC is a ProSoft generic Ethernet interface module. The module has a current consumption of 3 milliamperes at 24 Volts DC and 800 milliamperes at 5 Volts DC from the backplane. The MVI56-GEC has LED indicators to assist in monitoring and troubleshooting functions. The application port on the MVI56-GEC is an Ethernet port using an RJ45 connector. The port features link and activity LED indicators. Also, the application ports (PRT1, PRT2) supports full hardware handshaking. The second RJ45 port (from the top) on the MVI56-GEC generic interface module is a debug/Configuration port (CFG) and it does not support hardware handshaking.
The P1 and P2 ports on the MVI56-GEC are used for interfacing the module with serial modules. The main purpose of the MVI56-GEC ASCII interface module is to make connecting ASCII devices with the TCP/IP protocol and ControlLogix processors easy. The devices to be interfaced may have Ethernet capabilities or they may be part of an Ethernet connection using a thin server. The MVI56-GEC occupies a slot in the Input/Output rack whether remote or local. For enhanced data transfer between the interface module and ControlLogix processor, the MVI56-GEC employs a proprietary backplane technology.
