The ProSoft MVI56-S3964R is a protocol module that acts as a Siemens 3964R Network Interface Module. This protocol module manufactured by ProSoft Technology serves to make point-to-point communication between any ControlLogix processor, like the 1756-L1, 1756-L1Mx, 1756-L55, or the 1756-L6x, and any other device with the Siemens 3964R communication capability. Basically, it enables communication between Allen-Bradley PLCs and Siemens devices because the 3964R protocol was invented by the Siemens Corporation. The Prosoft MVI56-S3964R uses a peer-to-peer protocol in essence, with reading and writing functions. It performs the BCC checksum to ensure the safety of the transfer. The device uses 2 RS-232 or RS-422 communication ports that operate independently to communicate with devices.
The module occupies 1 slot in ControlLogix chassis and it is 1756 backplane compatible. It consumes 800 mA at 5 Volts DC or 3 mA at 24 Volts DC. The ControlLogix processor recognizes the module as an I/O module and allows it to access the processor memory for the data transfer to be fast and reliable. To put data transfer on the right track, ladder logic is used. To make things easier in the implementation process, example ladder programs are delivered with the Prosoft MVI56-S3964R protocol module in the user applications. The maximum transfer packet that can be sent/received is 512 bytes. Communication activity is signaled through LEDs and it is also available through acknowledgment telegrams, so there is always a way to extract information about data transfer quality. The Prosoft MVI56-S3964R package includes 2 cables, 1 adapter, and 1 CD, along with the protocol module itself.
