The 3170-MBS module from Allen-Bradley and ProSoft Technology is a Modbus slave interface module. It can interface with a maximum of 8 Allen-Bradley Integra I/O or Flex modules with any Modbus master module. The functionality provided by the 3170-MBS module includes a multi-drop configuration on one RS-485 link with other Modbus devices, interfacing analog or discrete I/O to a host, and adding FLEX I/O to applications that are already using devices from other manufacturers. The 3170-MBS module is configured by setting several dip-switches. Data images for Flex and Integra modules are pre-mapped into Modbus addresses which enables simple read/write through standard Modbus commands. Read/write access to all Flex and Integra modules are available to the 3170-MBS module.

The 3170-MBS module includes 8 I/O modules, 1 RS-485 port (with 3 screw terminations), status LEDs for power/control status, and serial TX, RX, and error status. The module requires 24 Volts DC input (19.2 to 31.2 Volts DC range) and a peak input power of 8.6 Watts. The peak backplane current is 640 milliamps at 5 Volts DC. The operating temperature range is from 0 to 55 degrees Celsius. The storage temperature range is from -40 to 85 degrees Celsius. The dimensions of the 3170-MBS module are 3.4 x 2.7 x 2.7 inches. When the 3170-MBS module is used in hazardous locations, the system power must be removed prior to the module replacement to prevent explosions. The 3170-MBS module is not hot-swappable. The power to the backplane needs to be disconnected before the module is inserted or removed. The rechargeable battery on the module is not replaceable. The charging time for the battery is 20 hours and it can provide backup power for 21 days.
