The 1771-DSX2 CPU module has been designed by Allen-Bradley to function as the main CPU module in a PLC 5 control system. It is meant to be installed in the PLC 5 chassis alongside the PLC 5 control systems I/O modules and power supply. The 1771-DSX2 main CPU module processes different kinds of controller information as it operates. It needs a KT expander module known as the Allen-Bradley 1771-DXKT expander module in order to operate. The 1771-DSX2 main CPU module can operate at 32 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit at 5 to 95% non-condensing ambient relative humidity.

The Allen-Bradley 1771-DSX2 module is an information processor and main CPU module for PLC-5 systems. On the module's front panel are an interface for a keyboard, a VGA interface for the monitor, three com ports, and a parallel port. A PCMCIA card slot is also provided on the module's front panel. The backplane current requirement for the 1771-DSX2 module is 1.2 Amps at 5 Volts DC. An Allen-Bradley PLC-5 system consist of a controller and I/O modules installed in a single 1771 chassis with a power supply. Remote I/O scanners are available on every PLC-5 controller. Extended-local I/O scanners are available on selected PLC-5 controllers. ControlNet interfaces are available on selected PLC-5 controllers. A 1771-SDN DeviceNet module needs to be added to the system to attain the DeviceNet functionality.
In a typical configuration, a ControlNet interface connects the 1771-DSX2 module to the ControlNet link. A 1771-ACN15 I/O module installed in each of the remote chassis provides an interface between the ControlNet link and the remote chassis I/Os. This means that the PLC-5 controller is able to monitor and control the I/Os located in the local and remote chassis. To power a chassis, either a standalone power supply can be installed in the left-most slot of the chassis or a 1771 power supply module can be installed in an I/O slot in the chassis. Operator interfaces can be selected for the 1771-DSX2 module based on the communication interfaces available on the PLC. It is recommended to place the I/Os for each controller on an isolated network. This will help to maximize performance and it will facilitate system changes.
The 1771-DSX2 module is an Allen-Bradley 386 CPU module. It is compatilbe with PLC-5 control systems.
