The Allen-Bradley 1771-KE is a PLC 2 Communication Interface Module. It interfaces Data Highway Module with intelligent RS-232-C compatible devices. It can serve as a replacement for 1771-KC/KD Communication processor modules. Direct, Longline, or Modern connections can be used to connect this module to different RS-232-C devices depending on the distance from the module. The 1771-KE can also be used as a slave interface between a Data Highway network and a SCADA master The 1771-KE module has data highway and RS-232-C communication ports with up to 19.2Kbps baud rate. It has a maximum power supply requirement of 5V DC at 1.2A. It obtains power supply from the rack in which it is mounted. The 1771-KE needs one slot for installation in the 1771 I/O chassis and must be mounted within 100 feet of the data highway cable. Key Band positions for proper installation are between pins 6 - 8 for the lower connector and pins 10 - 14 for the upper connector. The 1771-KE has 6 Switch assemblies to select various communication options. For wiring, a 1770-CD data highway dropline cable and a 1770-CG data terminal interface cable or a 1770-CP modern interface cable is used. The 1771-KE module has 5 LED indicators on the front for troubleshooting and diagnostics. For security, a 16-bit CRC (Cycle Redundancy Check) on a data highway link and an 8-bit BCC (Block Check Character) or a 16bit CRC on RS-232-C link is done for data highway network message transmission.
