The Allen-Bradley/Rockwell Automation 1771-M3 stepper controller module is manufactured as part of the Allen-Bradley PLC 5 product line. It is designed to be used as part of a complete PLC 5 servo positioning assembly along with a servo expander module that has 2 wiring arms. The 1771-M3 stepper controller module can be installed in an Allen-Bradley Bulletin 1771 I/O chassis along with up to 3 expander modules at a time. This stepper controller module only needs 1 chassis slot, and it should never be installed in the same chassis as another stepper controller module because this can cause errors. The 1771-M3 stepper controller module communicates with the expander modules that it is connected to through the backplane connections in the I/O chassis.

The 1771-M3 Servo Controller Module by Allen-Bradley is a component of the B Series Servo Positioning Assembly which controls the motion of a user-supplied machine axis, and it functions by automatically coordinating the block transfer and bringing the ladder programming to a minimum. The 1771-M3 communicates with the expander module (1771-ES) by transmitting the axis motion command to it, and the module requires a 1.75A backplane current. It is installed in the 1771 I/O chassis slot and is keyed to it by attaching the module’s top connector between pins 2 and 4 and pins 8 and 10. The 1771-M3 has an isolated output voltage of 10V DC (max) and uses a D/V converter with a signed 12-bit converter resolution. The controller supports an encoder input with 250 KHz and 20 KHz differential and single-ended input rates, a tachometer input with 50V (max) at 20 Kilo Ohms input rating, and a discrete input with 11.2K or 1.2K switch for each input. The 1771-M3 has a hardware output with a 15V rating at 1 kilo Ohms (with 0.5mA OFF-state current), and a drive disables output with a 100mA sinking/sourcing current at 30V DC (max). The 1771-M3 provides 19999.999mm (res 0.001mm) maximum programmable position with an acceleration/deceleration of 99.99mpm/s and an initial gain of 9.99mmpm/mil following error with an overall servo sample period of 2ms. The 1771-M3 has a working temperature range between 0° and 60°C (32° and 140°F) at 5-95% non-condensing ambient humidity, and a non-operating temperature range of -40-85°C (-40-185°F).
