The Allen-Bradley 1785-L80E-E is a PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) from the PLC-5 family of programmable controllers. It contains an integrated Ethernet port. The controller is a modular component of a 1771 I/O system composed of the following elements: an I/O chassis (which requires configuration), a power supply, and the 1785-L80E-E controller.

A key switch on the 1785-L80E-E controller selects between the following controller modes: Program, Run, and Remote. The maximum user memory is 100 k words. The maximum number of I/O supported is 3072 (any mix) or 3072 in + 3072 out (complementary). A total of 65 IO chassis (including 64 remote) are supported. The controller also has the following communication ports: 1 Ethernet port, 2 DH+/remote I/O port, 1 serial port configurable for RS-232 / RS-423 communication (compatible with RS-422A), and one 8-pin Mini-DIN DH+ programming terminal connections for connecting to a PC. Any 802.3-compliant shielded or unshielded twisted pair cable can be used with the Ethernet port. The remote I/O require the use of 1770-CD cables and the Belden 8342 cable (or equivalent) for serial ports.

The 1785-L80E-E controller is an email client and it can send emails in response to a command from a mail server. The controller can be configured to send an email when an alarm is triggered or when a certain state is reached. The controller also contains a web server which can be accessed through the Ethernet port by using a web browser.

The 1785-L80E-E controller uses a battery whose lifespan depends on the operating temperature and the amount of time for which power is supplied to the controller.  At 60 ºC, the average battery life is around 84 days (power off 50%) and once the battery indicator LED turns on, the battery lasts for a further 5 days. At 25 ºC, the average battery life is 1.2 years (power off 50%) and once the battery indicator LED turns on, the battery lasts for a further 30 days. To prevent an electric arc from occurring (which could cause explosions in hazardous locations), the power should be disconnected when the battery is being replaced. Communication cables should also be only connected/disconnected when power is switched off and the area around the controller is nonhazardous.

The power consumed by the 1785-L80E-E is 3.6 A at 5V DC and the maximum power dissipated during operation is 18.9 W. The controller weight is 1.39 kg. The operating temperature range is 0-60 ºC (32-140ºF) at 0 - 95% relative humidity (non-condensing).
