The 163440 is a 3-pole contactor with a DB Contact Arrangement that is designed and manufactured by Allen-Bradley. It was launched more than 20 years ago as one of the products that support the functioning of the Allen-Bradley 1395 DC drives. It is built to support DC drives from the Allen-Bradley A Series that belong either to a 111 to 140 Amps current rating or to a 141 to 180 Amps current rating. This includes 40 and 50 Horsepower rated DC drives that work on 230 Volts AC, and it includes 75 and 100 Horsepower rated 1395 DC drives that are connected to 460 Volts AC power sources. The 163440 can also be connected to 550 Volts DC Voltage which is usually the maximum voltage on the output side of 1395 DC drives. Its control coil works with 115 Volts AC.
The 163440 contactor can be found labeled as the SP-163440 or the 1395-163440. It supersedes the obsolete 123184 spare part from the Bulletin 1395 catalogs. When connected to the output side of the 1395 DC drive, it can provide the connecting and disconnecting method between the drive controller and drive motor. The controller in the DC drive usually sends 115 Volts AC to the contactor’s coil during its start sequence. When the controller needs to stop the motor, it will close this contactor immediately if it is set as a coast-to-rest, or it will wait for a while until the motor reaches zero speed if it is set to the ramp-to-rest stop. If the users need auxiliary contacts for their applications, they can order the 40430-300-52 (normally open) or the 40430-850-01 (normally closed) contact kits that can be mounted easily on the 163440 contactor.
