The 8520-KBI is a keyboard I/O ring interface that is used as part of Allen-Bradley’s 9/Series CNC machining systems. This module comes with a variety of input and output connections and jumper settings for operation either with monochrome or colored operator panel. The 8520-KBI comes with a fiber optic interface (Red and Black ports) for connection to the I/O ring. The Red port is the output port that connects the receiver to the next module in the I/O ring while the Black port is the input port that connects the transmitter to the previous module in the I/O ring. A unique node address must be assigned to this module when connected to the I/O ring. To install the 8520-KBI, the supply voltage to the control circuit must be turned off. Once power is removed, disconnect the cable connection from the operator power supply to the module and the flat cable which connects the operator keyboard to the I/O ring interface. Disconnect both the fiber connectors installed to the IN and OUT ports of the module. Once incoming and outgoing connections are dismantled from the module, remove the mounting screws on each corner of the keyboard I/O ring interface. To install the replacement keyboard I/O ring interface, mount the replacement part via the mounting screw holes on each corner of the module. Prior to re-connecting the I/O connections, set the node address by matching the previous JP1 and JP2 settings of the old module. Additionally, set the JP3 jumper to correspond to the screen used specifically, middle pin, and COP pin shorted when a color operator panel is used. For the monochrome operator panel, the middle pin and the MOP pin must be shorted.

The Allen-Bradley 8520-KBI is a KEYBOARD INTERFACE for the I/O RING. It is used as a part of Allen-Bradley’s 9/Series CNC machining systems. This is an interface component that receives all the data entering through the keyboard and the soft keys on the 9/series CNC human-machine interface and transfers it to the I/O ring. The keyboard I/O ring interface connectors (black for the receiver and red for the transmitter) are used to connect fiber optic cables to send and receive data from a 51 alphanumeric soft keys keyboard. This is how the keyboard I/O ring interface represents a medium for data transfer from the operator (start machine functions and program editing) to the CNC control devices. The 8520-KBI also works together with the MTB panel (switches and push buttons) as well as the RPGs to enable the operator to interface with the CNC motherboard and CPU. The 8520-KBI keyboard I/O ring interface receives 5 Volts of DC power from the operator panel power supply. For setting a node address of this interface module two jumpers (JP1 and JP2) are available. The third jumper JP3 is used to select a type of monitor to be attached (monochrome or color operator panel). The 8520-KBI has a fault indicator integrated on its board. This fault indicator is a red LED, which will be activated if there is a ring communication error. CNC 9/series systems provide a possibility of using multiple keyboards on the communication ring. If this is the case, a PAL is used to select the active keyboard over the $KYB_SEL option. By doing this, the PAL enables the operator to connect a keyboard while disregarding other keyboard connections on the communication ring for access to the control device (their inputs will not execute commands and only monitoring is enabled).
