The Allen-Bradley 20AD040A3AYNACNN is a motor controller with a user adjustable frequency. The drive is designed to be operated from a 3-phase power source. However, the 20AD040A3AYNACNN, as with other PowerFlex 70 drives, can be powered by a single-phase input power source, provided that the output current is derated by 50%. When interfacing with the drive and the motor, the motor leads should not exceed a length of 30 meters. Additionally, the I/O wiring for the 20AD040A3AYNACNN and other drives in the same family strictly require the use of copper wires that can comfortably accommodate a maximum temperature of 75 degrees Celsius. The copper wires should also have an insulation voltage of 600 Volts or higher.

Note that the signal and control wires should be routed separately from the power wiring to reduce noise interference. Signal noise can also be avoided by not grounding the “common” or “-” I/O terminals. These terminals are meant to minimize common mode interference. Signal noise is capable of causing unpredictable motor behaviors during drive acceleration, deceleration, and direction. The 20AD040A3AYNACNN is interfaced with other devices on the network through a ControlNet communication port. The drive contains a Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) that helps to arrest system faults in a timely manner. The amperage rating for the 20AD040A3AYNACNN stands at 40 Amps whiles its voltage and frequency stand at 480 Volts AC and 50 Hertz, respectively. The 20AD040A3AYNACNN, as with other PowerFlex variable frequency drives, employs the Datalink mechanism to exchange data with a programmable controller, eliminating the need for Block Transfer or Explicit Messaging.
