Troubleshooting Your PowerFlex 70 Drive

This page outlines information you will need to troubleshoot your PowerFlex 70 Drive. 

PowerFlex 70 Drive Status

The state of the drive is perpetually monitored and any changes will be communicated via LED and the HIM, assuming the HIM is present. When the drive indicates a fault has occurred, it will display certain information. Specifically, the display will report "Faulted" with the fault number and name and the time elapsed since the fault was detected. To regain control of the interface, press Escape. The dive will also indicate an alarm by indicating the alarm name and the alarm bell graphic. 

PowerFlex 70 Drive Faults

There are three types of faults that can affect your PowerFlex 70 Drive: Auto-Reset Run, Non-Resettable, and User Configurable. An Auto-Reset/Run fault, the drive will try to automatically reset the fault. If the fault's cause is not present at the time of reset, the fault will reset and the drive will restart. A Non-Resettable fault will likely require a drive or motor repair. However, this kind of fault can also be caused by wiring or programming errors. Once the cause of the fault is corrected, the fault may be cleared. User configurable faults can either be enabled or disabled in order to annunciate or ignore a fault condition.

DC bus voltage has fallen beneath the minimum value. Enable/Disable with the Fault Config 1 parameter. 

Watch for low voltage or power interruption in the incoming AC line. Standard control: 509 VDC at 600 V input, 407 VDC at 400-480 input, or 204 VDC at 200-240V input. Enhanced Control: 375 VDC at 600V input, 300 VDC at 400-480 V input, or 160 VDC at 200-240 V input.

OverVoltage-

DC bus voltage exceeded the maximum value. Auto-Reset Run

Watch for high line voltage or transient conditions on the AC line. Bus overvoltage can be caused by motor regeneration. You can either extend the decel time or install a dynamic brake.

Motor OverLoad-

Internal electronic overload trip. Enable or Disable with the Fault Config 1 parameter. Auto-Reset Run, User Configurable 

Excessibe motor load. Reduce the load, the current should not exceed the current set by the Motor NP FLA parameter. Check the level of the flux braking in the Flux Braking % parameter (if enabled).

Heatsink OvrTemp-

Heatsink temperatures exceed 100% of the Drive Temp parameter. Auto-Reset Run

Ensure the maximum ambient temperature has not been exceeded then check the fan check for excess load.

Trnsistr OvrTempt-

Output transistors have surpassed the maximum operating temperature. Auto-Reset Run

Ensure the maximum ambient temperature has not been exceeded then check the fan check for excess load.

Heatsink LowTemp-

Annunciates too low of a  temperature case or an open NTC circuit. 

Check the ambient temperature, if the temperature is too cold, add a space heater. Check the connections to the NTC (heatsink temperature sensing device).

HW OverCurrent-

Drive output current has surpassed the hardware current limit. Auto-Reset Run

Check for shorts in the outputs of either the drive or motor. Check the programming. Ensure there is no excess load, improper boost settings or make sure the DC bare volts are not set too high.

Ground Fault-

Current path to earth ground greater than 25% of drive rating. Auto-Reset Run

Look for a grounded condition in the motor and external wiring to the drive output terminals.

Load Loss-

Drive output torque current is below the value set in the Load Loss Level parameter for longer than the value set in the Load Loss time parameter. 

Ensure there is a good connection between the motor and the load. Check the level and time requirements.

Motor Thermistor-

The thermistor output is out of range. 

Ensure the thermistor is connected. The motor is overheated, reduce the load.

Input Phase Loss-

DC bus ripple has surpassed a preset level. 

Check the incoming power for either a missing phase or a blown fuse.

Output Phase Loss-

Current in at least one phase has been lost or remains below the preset level

Check the wiring of the drive and motor and look for phase-to-phase continuity at the motor terminal. Ensure the motor leads are connected.

Decel Inhibit-

The drive is not following an acceleration or deceleration command because it is attempting to limit the bus voltage. 

Ensure the voltage is within the drives limits and that the system ground impedance follows proper grounding techniques. Disable the bus regulation and consider adding a dynamic brake resistor. Extend deceleration time.

Overspeed Limit-

Functions have attempted to add an output frequency adjustment greater than the value programmed in the Overspeed Limit parameter. Auto-Reset Run

Remove excessive load. Remove overhauling conditions. Increase the Overspeed Limit parameter.

Analog In Loss-

Analog input configured to fault upon signal loss, and a signal loss has occurred. Configure the Anlg In X Loss parameter

Check the parameters and look for either broken or loose connections at the inputs.

Auto Rstrt Tries-

Failed attempt to reset a drive fault and resume running for the programmed number in the Flt RstRun Tries parameter. Enable/Disable with the parameter Fault Config 1. 

Correct the fault's cause and manually clear the fault.

SW OverCurrent-

The drive output current has exceeded the 1ms current rating. 

Check for excess load and or improper DC boost setting. The DC brake volts may be set too high. Check the level of flux braking in the Flux Braking % parameter (if it is enabled).

Phase U, V, or W to Ground-

Phase to ground fault detected between the drive and motor is either phase U, V, or W. 

Check the wiring between the drive and the motor. Look for a grounded phase in the motor. You may need to replace the drive.

Check for a shorted condition in the motor and drive output terminal wiring. You may need to replace the drive.

Review the load requirements and the Current Lmt Val parameter setting.

Reduce load or increase the Accel Time.

The resistance of the internal DB unit is out of range.

"Calculate" is the autotune default and the value determined by the autotune procedure for IR Drop Volts. This value is not within the range of acceptable values

DPI port communication stopped. SCANport device was connected to a drive operating DPI devices at 500k baud.

Check the wiring to the port and replace the wiring, adapters, port expander, Main Control Board or the entire drive as necessary. Check the HIM connection. This fault can also be caused by intentionally disconnecting the adapter when the Logic Mask bit is set to 1. Set the Logic Mask bit to 0 to disable the fault.

IXo Voltage Range-

The calculated motor inductive impedance voltage surpasses 25% of the values as set in Motor NP Volts

Check for proper motor sizing and the Motor NP Volts parameter 41 programming. It is possible that additional output impedance is required.

Ensure there is not externally induced noise and replace the encoder.

Ensure install Safe-Off board or jumper pins 3 and 4 are installed. Ensure the enable jumper on the main control board is removed. You may need to replace either the Safe-Off board or the control board.

EEPROM data is corrupt upon the drive power up

Either clear the fault or cycle the drive's power

Fatal Faults-

The diagnostic code reflects a drive malfunction. Non-Resettable.

Cycle the power and replace the Main Control Board.

 

How to Manually Clear Faults

  1. Press Escape to regain control of the keypad. 
  2. Take corrective action to address the cause of the fault. The cause of the fault must be resolved before clearing the fault. See the table above.
  3. To clear the fault either:
    1. Restart the drive (cycle power)
    2. Select Stop 
    3. Set Fault Clear (parameter 240) to 1 or
    4. Select "Clear Faults" located on the HIM Diagnostic menu

PowerFlex 70 Drive - Common Issues 

Drive Cannot Reverse Motor Direction

First, verify that reverse has not been disabled and that all motor and digital input wiring is properly phased for reverse. Ensure the digital input is selected for reversing control. A bipolar analog speed command input may be incorrectly wired or a signal may be absent. Use a meter to check there is an analog input voltage present and check the wiring. Note, a positive voltage commands a forward direction and a negative voltage commands a reverse direction. 

Drive Non-Responsive to Speed Change Command

If the LCD HIM status line reads "At Speed" and the output is 0 Hertz, there is no value coming from the source of the command. Assuming the source is an analog input, ensure the wiring is correct and use a meter to check for a signal. Chech the Command Freq parameter for correct source. 

If no indicator light is on, the reference source selected is incorrect. Check and verify the settings in the parameters Speed Ref Source and Speed Ref A Sel, Drive Status 1, Dig In Status, and Digital Inx Sel. 

Drive Will Not Start From HIM

The drive may be programmed for 2-wire control, however, HIM start is disabled for 2-wire control. If 2-wire control is necessary, you will not need to take any action. If 3-wire control is required, reprogram the Digital Inx Sel parameter for the correct inputs. 

Drive Will Not Start From Start/Run Inputs

If the red status indicator light is flashing, the drive is faulted. Clear the fault, see "How to Manually Clear Faults" above for more information. Verify the programming is correct by checking the parameters Start Source and Digital Inx Select settings. Verify all input wiring is correct. 

Decel Inhibit Fault After Stopping the Drive

You will see the decel inhibit fault screen and the LED Status line will read "Faulted." This means the bus regulation feature is enabled and is halting deceleration because of excessive bus voltage. This excess voltage is likely caused by excessive regenerated energy or an unstable AC line input voltage. The internal timer may have halted drive operation. 

Reprogram the bus regulation in parameters 161 and 162 and clear the Adjust Freq selection. Disable bus regulation in the same parameters and add a dynamic brake. Either correct the AC input line instability or add an isolation transformer. You will need to reset the drive. 

Unstable Motor Operation

The motor data was entered incorrectly or the Autotune operation has not been performed. Enter motor nameplate data. Perform either the "Static" or "Rotate" procedures in the Autotun parameter. 

Motor/Drive Not Accelerating to Command Speed

First, check the acceleration time. If this value is excessive, adjust the value is the Accel Time x parameter. Programming may be preventing the drive output from exceeding limiting values. To check this, look at Maximum Freq and Minimum Freq to ensure the programming is not limiting the speed. It is also possible that the speed command source or speed command value do not align with the Command Freq or the Control Source. Check both these parameters. 

The excess load or short acceleration times can force the drive int a current limit which results in decreased or stopped acceleration. Simply reprogram the Accel Time x parameter.
