The Allen-Bradley 19101-660 is an active shunt regulator that can be used with various ULTRA series drives, specifically the ULTRA3000, ULTRA5000, and ULTRA 100 drives, as they do not come with internal shunt circuitry that prevents overvoltage faults due to undissipated excess energy. It is capable of monitoring the drive’s DC bus voltage and if the voltage of the drive reaches the activation level, this shunt regulator will drop the DC bus voltage, dissipating the excess energy as heat. Note that the amount of average power that can be dissipated on a drive is dependent on the ambient temperature. This 300 W shunt regulator has peak shunting and continuous shunt capabilities, with the peak shunting a result of using a shunt resistor of 36 Ω and the continuous shunt is dependent on the peak power level, shunt time, and cycle time. When installing the 19101-660 shunt regulator, it is vital that it only be placed in an upright position and that there are no temperature-sensitive components placed above.
