The Allen-Bradley 9101-2185 1398 Ultra Plus Series Position Drive Module is in a class of its own and one of the best motion control systems in the market manufactured by Allen-Bradley. It is a highly efficient device that integrates a programmable position controller and sinusoidal brushless motor velocity controller together in one compact package. The utility of the device is twofold; it can be either used as a programmable and customizable standalone controller or be a component part in a flexible automation system as a distribution motion control element connected with a PC. The installation of the device is quite simple with the primary installation requirement being a flat surface. For device safety, it needs to be enclosed in a metal enclosure that will keep it out of reach of unauthorized personnel. Since the device is very sensitive, ensuring the installation location is cool, clean, and dry prior to installation is important. The system components of the 9101-2185 consist of a positioning drive module, a brushless motor, operator terminal, a personality module, and a power-supply module. The first component is responsible for maintaining the torque, velocity, and positioning of the 9101-2185’s motor. An optical encoder provides feedback to the brushless motor which in turn helps the positioning drive module and the personality module that optimizes and synchronizes the motor and controller.
The operator terminal is intuitive and functional. With a glance, the users can easily view status information, functions, controls, and the variables of the device. The PDM devices come with a diverse range of power package options with both integrated and external power supply requirements present in the models. The input requirement for the power-supply module is 100 to 240 Volts AC. The models that incorporate the integrated power-supply include the 1398-PDM-10, 20, 30, and 75 and the 1398-PDM- 25, 50,100, and 150, respectively. The output difference between the integrated and external power supply models is quite large. Paired up with a standard motor, the models that use the integrated power supply can generate, on average, 3 to 350 pounds on an inch of torque velocity while the external power supply models can generate an average of 20 to 750 pounds on an inch of torque velocity. The 9101-2185 is compatible with most common types of motors manufactured by Allen-Bradley including the H-Series, F-series, and N-Series motors. These motors come with an integrated encoder as well as flexible options such as spring-set brakes as well as oil seals. The device comes with motor power and conductor cables (15-pin D) of four sizes which are 10, 25, 50, and 75 feet. Some 9-pin serial cables can also be used with the device.
