The Allen-Bradley 150-A97NBDB is a soft-starter device from Allen-Bradley. It is part of the SMC Plus Smart Motor Controller product family which is mainly used to implement protective and efficient motor start-up and stopping functions. This smart motor controllers contributes to lowered energy consumption which effectively reduces the cost of operating a control system driven by industrial AC motors. The 150-A97NBDB has programmable features, allowing parameters to be custom set to fit the operational requirements. Configurable starting methods include Kick Start, Current limit start, and Full voltage start while the added optional control is pump control. With pump control, pipe rattling during start-up can be minimized, preventing possible damage to process connection and unwanted surges. It is also capable of energy saver mode wherein the controller wisely detects if the connected motor is running with minimum or low load conditions. The 150-A97NBDB supports direct panel mounting and comes with integrated Noise R/F immunity, DV/Dt Protection via the snubber network, Transient protection courtesy of Metal Oxide Varistors (MOV). This drive also has a Repetitive Peak Inverse Voltage rating of 1400 V. The 150-A97NBDB operates at input voltage range of 208-480VAC, 3-Phase, 47-63 Hz and delivers a continuous output current of 97 Amperes while the controllers maximum output power can reached up to 55 kW or 75 Hp. It requires a separate control voltage source of 120-240 VAC, 1-Phase supply voltage. It also has a pair of auxiliary contacts in the form of One (1) Normally Open (N.O.) and One (1) Normally Closed (N.C.) contact outputs.

This controller exhibits a range of starting modes that can be standard, including the dual ramp start, the soft start with selectable kickstart, the full-voltage start, and the current limit start with selectable kickstart. Other features which offer the user benefits in a broader perspective include metering, expanded protective features, and communication capability. Its innovative starting and stopping options which provide enhanced performance include pump control, soft stop, accu-stop, preset slow speed, slow speed with braking, and SMP smart motor braking. During the soft start, the 150-A97NBDB motor is given a torque initial setting which can be adjusted by the user from 0-90% of the locked rotor torque. The output voltage is smoothly increased from the initial torque level during the acceleration ramp time. The user can adjust the ramp-time from 0 to 30 seconds. The output voltage can also automatically switch to full-voltage if the 150-A97NBDB SMC Plus controller immediately senses when the motor has gotten to the up-to-speed condition when the voltage ramp operation is taking place. The selectable kickstart of the 150-A97NBDB SMC-2 Plus controller allows for a boost at startup so that loads which require a high torque to get started can break away. This happens for the specific purpose of providing a 550% pulse of the current (full-load current). The current limit start provides a start which is at a fixed reduced voltage. The dual ramp start is vital for applications which have a variety of loads which also have varying torque requirements.
