The Allen-Bradley 1769-ADN is a CompactLogix I/O DeviceNet Adapter module. It is an open, low-level network module that connects simple industrial devices such as actuators and sensors with high-level devices such as computers and PLC controllers. It uses the well-known Common Industrial Protocol (CIP) that provides various capabilities such as control, data collection, and configuration for industrial devices. It connects low-level devices directly to plant floor controllers instead of interfacing them through I/O modules. Data is sent as needed through this module. The 1769-ADN adapter module has a maximum DeviceNet communication rate of 125 Kbps for 500 meters, 250 Kbps for 250 meters and 500 Kbps for 100 meters. It has a maximum of 30 I/O nodes. It draws a current of 450 mA (Series A) and 500 mA (Series B) at 5 Volts DC. It has a dimension of 4.65 x 1.97 x 3.43 inches. and weighs 0.6 pounds.

This module has a current draw of 90 mA at 24 Volts DC and voltage of 11 to 25 Volts DC. It has a 30 Volt isolation voltage and a 4.7 Watt Power dissipation. For installation, it uses a DIN rail or panel mounting method with an open enclosure and it requires one slot in a CompactLogix chassis. The adapter should not be more than 4 modules (Series A) or 5 modules (Series B) away from the power supply. The 1769-ADN adapter module has more diagnostic features providing better fault detection and improved data collection. For wiring, the 802.3 compliant twisted pair cable with 2 millimeters squared (14 AWG) category standard must be used. It has a reduced start-up time and less wiring than a normal hard-wired system.

The Allen-Bradley 1769-ADN is a DeviceNet adapter that is compatible for use with 1769 CompactLogix or MircoLogix 1500 automation platforms. This module permits a controller or any compatible device to communicate and exchange data with field instruments and computer-based control system through the DeviceNet protocol.

This module supports transmission speed of 125k bit/s, 250k bit/s, and 500k bit/s using Allen-Bradley DeviceNet cable. This utilizes Common Industrial Protocol (CIP) as the main communication backbone and partners to partner to an existing DeviceNet scanner module in the network. This adapter responds to the request of the Scanner such as 1769-SDN to provide the requested data.

This communication module may be used to interface and send messages to controllers belonging to the 1769 platform. It is also capable of responding to DeviceNet scanners of other Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) product family such as PLC5, SLC500 and ControLogix. This is achieved with the utilization of the supported messaging functions.

This adapter may be installed beside any 1769 Compact I/O module. However, the Power Supply Distance rating must be met which is 4. This means that the module cannot be installed more than Frou (4) modules away from the power supply. When used with a MircoLogix 1500, the modules is installed beside the base unit or to an adjacent module.

Typical problems arise when the 1769-AND is not properly installed especially to a 1769 CompactLogix assembly. When installing the 1769-ADN adapter to a CompactLogix system, the bus connectors must be securely locked to establish an electrical connection. If resistance is felt when securing the module, disengage the module and inspect if the PIN connectors are properly aligned before proceeding again with the connection.
