The Allen-Bradley 1797-BIC is a FLEX Ex bus isolator module. The purpose of this FLEX Ex bus isolator module is for connecting standard FLEX I/O modules and provide intrinsically safe connection.

The 1797-BIC FLEX Ex bus isolator module features power indicators, a label, a module locking tab, a removable power connector, a FLEX Ex backplane connector and connector cover, and a master backplane connector. It can be used in intermixed systems that have multiple FLEX I/O modules on the same DIN Rail that use the same adapter. Note that the 1797-BIC FLEX Ex bus isolator module should be attached to the system in the safe part of the operating environment if the system is located in an environment with hazardous locations or machines in it.

For proper operation, the Allen-Bradley 1797-BIC FLEX Ex bus isolator module needs to be synchronously power cycled to its associated adapter. Install it on the DIN Rail by rotating and pressing it into place, but never install or remove this module while power is applied to it or the power may cause damage to the device or injury to the technicians. The 1797-BIC FLEX Ex bus isolator module meets the CE standards for safe use in certain kinds of hazardous locations. Never try to run signals that are not intrinsically safe through this isolator module. The 1797-BIC FLEX Ex bus isolator module can use the 1794-CE1 and 1794-CE3 cables.

The 1797-BIC supports installation of up to Eight (8) modules. It offers isolation pathways such as Galvanic to DIN EN 60079-11 Flexbus to Flexbus isolation and Galvanic to DIN EN 60079-11 Flexbus to slave side isolation path. This module requires an input supply voltage range of 18-32VDC with supply current of 0.15A. It comes with a built-in Power status indicators.

The 1797-BIC is a DIN rail mounted device. This module is delivered with a removable power connector, along other important parts such as FLEX Ex backplane connector, FLEX Ex backplane connector cover, 7 Master backplane connector and FLEX I/O backplane connector.

This module provides interconnects IS and non-IS field device wiring within the same I/O group. This module permits combination of a Flex Ex system installed within a hazardous area and another standard Flex I/O modules installed in non-hazardous areas. This bus isolator connects to the Flex Ex system via the 1794-CE3 cable wherein a maximum of 1 m or 3.28 ft distance is permitted between the Flex Ex modules and the 1797-BIC Bus Isolator module.

To maintain integrity if the IS system, only connect the Flex Ex backplane connector to modules with intrinsic safety capability. Additionally, as this module is separately powered, always power cycle this module whenever the communication adapter is power cycled to maintain connection.
