The Allen-Bradley 1771-AF1 is a communication converter module, specifically a fiber-optic converter. This module has a rackless design, able to operate at a stand-alone configuration. This module converts Remote I/O (RIO) and data highway Plus (DH+) communication protocol to cover more length of communication distance as well as use in a noisy environment for implementing improved communication between compatible devices such as PLCs, adapters, and other devices. The 1771-AF1 comes with a variety of status LED indicators including channel activity indicators with Four (4) status LED indicators; Channel 1 and Channel 2 Fiber ports with One (1) LED assigned for each fiber LED of every channel marked as Transmit and receive. It comes with a screw-type terminal block for the termination of twinaxial cables. The 1771-AF1 supports a communication rate of up to 57.6K bits per second and is able to reach a data transmission rate of up to 115,200 bits per second when the duplex fiber-optic cable is utilized. This converter module allows re-strengthening of data and I/O signals that is able to reach up to 30,000feet of communication distance. The power supply to the 1771-AF1 is terminated to the terminal block. This module has power requirements of 5VDC and a supply current of 600 mA. It must be installed in an environment with a temperature range of -25 to +70 degrees Celsius or stored at a temperature range of -25 to +85 degrees Celsius. This module is intended to be installed within an enclosure with a protection rating equivalent to NEMA type 12. It supports direct panel mounting as the module is provided with mounting tabs. When a 100/140um fiber cable is utilized, the maximum length between 2 fiber-optic modules is not to exceed 6500 feet while a combination of twinaxial and fiber-optic cables cannot exceed 43,000 ft of communication distance.
The Allen-Bradley 1771-AF1 is a PLC 5 Fiber-Optic Converter (Stand-alone). It allows DH+ and I/O signals between two PLC 5 family controllers to travel through a fiber-optic cable in electrically noisy environments. It converts electrical signals into light signals for transmission over the fiber-optic cables and then it converts the light signals back into electrical signals for transmission on twinaxial electrical cables. The 1771-AF1 produces no significant system delay and maintains transparency between devices. It also works as a repeater, amplifying electrical signals for a cable distance of up to 30,000 feet. The 1771-AF1 converter needs an external 5V DC power supply and uses its terminal block for wire connections. It uses twinaxial electrical cables and fiber-optic pre-terminated cables that are 75 m (256 feet) long. It supports a communication rate of 57,600 bits/s and 115,200 bits/s for duplex fiber-optic cables. It uses star configuration and has a current load of 1A at 5V DC. It contains a mounting bracket for installation and must be enclosed in a NEMA type 12 or equivalent enclosure. The 1771-AF1 converter has power and channel indicators for operating and troubleshooting. The fiber-optic transmission has several advantages over traditional copper cable such as large bandwidth, noise immunity, small size, transmission security, safety, and electrical insulation. The 1771-AF1 is intended for industrial use with a 0 - 60 deg. C operating temperature and a 0 - 95% noncondensing relative humidity.

The 1771-AF1 supports conversion of Data Highway Plus (DH+) and Remote I/O (RIO) protocol.
Up to 30000 ft is supported.
No. This device is a stand-alone unit powered by 5VDc and 600 mA current.
The 1771-AF1 converter module is a standalone type of fiber optic converter module from the Allen-Bradley PLC 5 series. This converter module can be used in applications in arc welders, subways, airports, induction furnaces, oil wells, chemical refineries, and electrostatic paint booths. The 1771-AF1 fiber optic converter module supports wider bandwidth and higher levels of noise immunity than standard copper cable systems. This module does not need to be mounted on a chassis like some other converter modules do. The 1771-AF1 fiber optic converter module uses a terminal block for its wire connections and it operates with an external 5 Volts DC power supply.
