The Guard I/O 1791ES and 1791DS series is a series of I/O modules manufactured by Allen-Bradley. These modules help to control and monitor safety devices. They have the ability to communicate on the Ethernet/IP or DeviceNet networks by using the CIP safety protocol. The guard modules detect failures at the I/O and field device level and they help to achieve proper operator protection. The Guard I/O 1791ES and 1791DS series offer advantages to a safety control system. This series features self-diagnostics, hardware testing, and field circuit testing functions without additional programming. It helps to increase the safety shutdown ability without using additional relays. They can connect to standard and safety I/O by using the DeviceNet or Ethernet/IP networks. The Guard I/O 1791ES and 1791DS series modules are available with 3 different channel input and channel output options. They are also available with different high-current capacity outputs. All the Guard I/O modules have common circuit functionalities, operation processes, programming methods, and troubleshooting and diagnostics features.

The Guard I/O 1791ES and 1791DS series have the ability to detect short circuits, wire breakage, and discrepancies in the dual-channel circuitry. It is equipped with built-in diagnostic LEDs that show the I/O status and power status. Its modules are available with both removable and keyed terminal blocks. The safety modules in this series use common power and I/O wiring across the modules. They provide electronic overcurrent protection to all the outputs. A variety of Guard I/O is available to suit different application needs. They support both single or dual-channel output circuits. The Guard I/O 1791ES and 1791DS series offer the highest level of safety certified by the TUV standards for functional safety at a level of up to SIL 3 and PLe/ Category 4. The modules in this series can only be operated in an environment with a relative humidity range of 5 to 95%, non-condensing.
