The Allen-Bradley 1791ES-IB16 is a CompactBlock EtherNet/IP guard input module with 16 safety inputs and 16 test outputs and is mounted in an IP54-rated enclosure and higher. Its pulse test outputs are a current sourcing type that comes with short circuit protection. The maximum residual voltage of the 1791ES-IB16 module is 1.2V, while its maximum output leakage current is 0.1 mA. When used as a muted lamp output, its current range is 5-25 mA. The module has 16 current sinking (IEC 61131-2 type 3) inputs with 11V DC minimum ON-state input voltage and a 5V DC maximum OFF-state input voltage. It also has a maximum OFF-state leakage current of 13mA, with a minimum ON-state current of 3.3mA. The 1791ES-IB16 has 16 current-sourcing, pulse, test outputs, with pulse output current of 8A at 60 °C (140 °F) and at 0.7A per output. The module has a designated T5 temperature with an IP20 enclosure rating, and it has an isolation voltage of 50V DC tested at 800V DC for 60s between the input and the output. The Allen-Bradley 1791ES-IB16 is a CompactBlock Guard I/O Ethernet I/P Safety module. This module is used to implement Common Industrial Protocol (CIP) safety protocol over Ethernet I/P network. This module may be used in safety-control network systems that requires up to and including Safety Integrity Level Chain Limit 3 (SIL CL3), as specified by IEC 61508 and Category 4 (CAT 4) and Performance Level (PLe) as required by ISO-13849-1 standard.

This module is paired with a safety controller to monitor the status and fault diagnostics of the I/O modules. It comes with safety inputs compatible for use with safety devices such as emergency stop push buttons, safety curtains, and gate switches. It also comes with a dual-channel mode functionality that evaluates consistency between two (2) input signals which meets Safety Category 3 and 4. It also supports single-channel mode, used to evaluate one (1) input signal which meets Safety Category 2 as well as Performance Level D and SIL CL 2 applications.

The 1791ES-IB16 has a current sinking input type with a minimum on-state voltage of 11 Volts DC and maximum off-state voltage input of 5 Volts DC. It also has a pulse test output that is of Current sourcing output type with 0.7 Amperes per output; 8 Amperes total module @ 60 °C (140 °F). This module has an isolation voltage of 50 Volts (continuous), basic insulation, type tested at 800 Volts DC for 60 seconds between input channels and network.

For power and I/O wiring, the recommended wire size for use is 0.34…1.5 mm2 (22…16 AWG) solid or stranded copper wire with an insulation rating of 75 °C (167 °F ) or higher with maximum insulation thickness of 1.2 mm (3/64 in.).
