Common VFD/Servo Drives Issues/Failures:
The SMC-3 product series is part of the bigger 150 series by Allen-Bradley/Rockwell Automation. The series offers smart motor controllers that are actually soft starters based on microprocessor technology. The SMC-3 controllers are intended for use with 3-phase motors to increase efficiency through better control of the starts and stops. These devices can be incorporated into a variety of systems to meet the requirements of different applications. The SMC-3 devices have compact designs and their setup process is secure and easy. Some of the advantages of the SMC-3 controllers are integrated bypasses, reduced downtime, motor overload protection, and advanced diagnostics capabilities. These controllers have 5 modes for starting and stopping, including the soft start, kickstart, current limit, coast-to-rest, and soft stop. Also, it should be mentioned that the controllers from the SMC-3 series are CE marked and CSA certified. The controllers comply with standards like the UL 508, CSA C22.2 (no.14), and the EN/IEC 60947-1/60947-4-2 standards.
The SMC-3 controllers are made for input voltage ranges from 200 to 690 Volts and their current ranges from 1 to 480 Amps. These controllers have open types of enclosures and control voltage ratings of 100 to 240 Volts AC or 24 Volts AC/DC. Allen-Bradley/Rockwell Automation provides a variety of different models that generate power in a range from 0.75 to 900 Horsepower (1.5 to 560 kilowatts). The operating frequency range of these controllers is 50 to 60 Hertz and their rated impulse voltage is 6 kilovolts. The SMC-3 series offers a choice of accessories such as replacement fans, connecting modules, protective modules, auxiliary contact blocks, and terminal lug kits. These motor controllers operate in a temperature range of -50 to 50 degrees Celsius (23 to 122 degrees Fahrenheit) and at altitudes of up to 2000 meters (6560 feet). In addition to this, their enclosures provide IP 2X protection ratings. Also, the SMC-3 series controllers have a solid rating in regard to resistance to vibration and shock.
