About S801 Soft Starters

The Eaton Cutler-Hammer S801 soft starters are intelligent devices for reducing current peaks during the motor start-up process. S801 soft starters enable the users to start 3-phase motors effortlessly in a mechanical way, and with the proper acceleration time setting, the users may not even notice a difference in sound between situations when the motor is accelerating and when it is working with a steady speed. While accelerating the motors, the S801 soft starters regulate the voltage and current of the motors in a controlled manner through a 6-thyristor system. As soon as the motors reach the rated speed, the S801 starters activate bypass contactors to eliminate wear and tear on the electronic components and unnecessary power consumption. There are 2 motor starting methods available with the S801 starters, and these are the ramp start and current limit start.

The Control Interface Module (CIM) is installed on the front side of every S801 soft starter to enable the programming and operation of the soft starter. The CIM is the part of the device that users need to pay the most attention to because all the device settings are made here. The trip class is set via DIP switches, and over other DIP switches, the users can independently activate and deactivate the overload, jam, stall, phase loss, load disconnect, and phase reversal protection functions. The reset function can also be selected over the CIM to be automatic or manual. An automatic reset means that the S801 soft starters will attempt to auto-reset every 2.5 seconds. In the manual reset mode, the users must press the fault reset button. Special optional functions like edge sensing and level sensing can be added to the S801 soft starters.
