The 150 SMC-2 series of smart motor controllers from Allen-Bradley is a family of solid-state controllers that are designed for starting 3-phase squirrel-cage induction motors. This family of controllers supports 3 standard starting modes, namely the soft start, full voltage start, and the current limit start. Soft stopping is available as an option but it requires an interface module. The SMC-2 controllers can be used in either series controller configurations or in motor controller configurations. The SMC-2 controllers comply with multiple standards, including the CE, CSA, and UL standards. The SMC-2 controllers are available in the following 8 current ratings which are 5, 9, 16, 24, 35, 54, 68, and 97 Amps. The SMC-2 controllers support 200 to 230 Volts AC, 380 to 460 Volts AC, and 500 to 575 Volts AC voltage classes. The line frequencies that are supported include 50 and 60 Hertz.
The SMC-2 controllers are used in series with electromechanical motor starters. This configuration leads to a simple installation process, allows for the use of existing electromechanical starters with retrofits, and enables easy setup with digital adjustments. The interface option for the SMC-2 controllers provides direct on and off control and configurable auxiliary contacts and it also provides the optional soft stop feature. The energy-saver feature on SMC-2 controllers provides saves energy when the motor is unloaded or when it is running a light load. An optional protective module can be ordered which contains MOVs and protects the SCR from surges and noise on the power line. The SMC-2 controllers are available in open, IP 65, and IP 54 rated enclosures. The working temperature range is from 32 to 122 degrees Fahrenheit. The maximum recommended altitude for the installation of the SMC-2 controllers is 2000 meters above sea level.
