The Allen-Bradley MicroLogix 1400 series of small programmable logic controllers provides support for industrial applications with a maximum of 20 digital inputs and 12 digital outputs, and some analog models have 4 analog inputs and 2 analog outputs over it. This is the basic configuration supported by the PLCs themselves, but the processors can support up to 7 separately ordered 1762 expansion I/O modules at any time. Moreover, the PLCs have 3 communication ports which are 1 RS232C/RS485 isolated combo port, 1 RS232C non-isolated port, and 1 RJ45 connecting port for the Modbus TCP/IP protocol, EtherNet/IP peer-to-peer messaging, and DNP3 over IP. The Webserver capability is enabled over the Ethernet port, so the users can visually customize their view of the data stored in tables in the module memory. For this purpose, the devices have 128 KB (without a recipe) and up to 64 KB (after subtracting data logging) of memory. The memory available to the users in the PLCs is non-volatile RAM. A memory with a capacity of 10 KB is reserved for the user programs, and 10 KB of memory is user-configurable data space. The units also have a battery backup for maximum operational safety.

The Allen-Bradley MicroLogix 1400 controllers come with built-in LCDs. Other options that the users greatly appreciate on the MicroLogix 1400 controllers are the ability to display a logo or welcome text while initializing the devices, the ability to view user-defined messages on the screen, and the ability to view the status of the inputs, outputs, and display of mathematical variables from the program. Through LCD interfaces and control buttons, it is possible to change the parameters online, and this is an extremely useful option for handling equipment and machines, and also for testing and troubleshooting. The MicroLogix 1400 controllers are programmed with the RSLogix 500 software.
