The S801+ Soft Starters from Eaton have an electronic motor overload feature that protects the motor and power wiring from overheating due to excessive currents. Note that the S801+ Soft Starters require short circuit protection on their line sides. Starters in this series support both automatic and manual resetting. With automatic resetting, the S801+ Soft Starters will try to automatically clear a fault every 2.5 seconds. If the fault is cleared, the starter checks again in 5 seconds. If the fault remains clear, the system resets the fault. The Eaton S801+ Soft Starters use 6 Silicon Controlled Rectifiers (SCRs) that are connected in a full-wave power bridge. Note that a change in the SCRs conduction period is directly proportional to the voltage applied to the motor. Consequently, the motor’s torque is controlled. These soft starters eliminate abrupt starting and stopping in machines, and this extends the mechanical life of the machines.


Since the Eaton S801+ Soft Starters are used to soft start an induction motor, after the motor reaches its maximum intended speed, the internal contacts of the starter are closed to override the SCR. Instead of using a digital interface module like the one used by S811+ starters, the S801+ Soft Starters employ a control interface module (CIM) that helps the users to configure the motor and do other things. The S801+ Soft Starters can be used in applications such as pumps, chillers, and machine tools requiring no more than 100% of the motor’s rated starting torque. Starters with the S801+ series numbers have electrostatic discharge ratings of 4 kiloVolts of contact discharge and 8 kiloVolts of air discharge. Additionally, this group of starters has 30% voltage dips at 10 milliseconds and a 60% dip at 100 milliseconds. The S801+ Soft Starters support an elevation of 6600 feet without derating, a variety of mounting orientations, shock resistance of 15 G in any direction, and an operating and non-operating vibration resistance of 3 G at any direction. The S801+ Soft Starters feature the streamlined menu structure for ensuring ease of programming and ease of drive installation.
