Precision Control Capabilities

The PowerFlex 700S drives have advanced control methods for Induction and Brushless Motors. The drives feature:

  • Sine Coded PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) with programmable frequency carrier
  • Indirect Self-Organized Field-Oriented Control.

Selectable motor control options include permanent magnet motor control and field-oriented control with or without feedback devices. The drive also supports multiple programmable stop modes (like Coast, Current Limit, and Ramp), independently programmable deceleration and acceleration times, and adjustable S-Curve times. It comes with robust overload capabilities (110% for 1 minute, 150% for 3 seconds) and programmable current limits extending to 800% of rated output current. Additionally, it also comes with a U.L. standard Class 10 protection with speed-sensitive response (NEC Article 430, U.L. File E59272, Volume 12).

Speed Control

PowerFlex 700S drives ensure speed accuracy within 0.1% of the base speed across a 120:1 range without feedback. With feedback, the accuracy improves exceptionally, maintaining speed variations to just 0.001% of the base speed over the same 120:1 range.

Torque Regulation

Without feedback, these drives provide ±5% accuracy, with a 600 rad/sec bandwidth. For frames 9 & up, torque regulation without feedback stays around ±10% accuracy. However, when feedback is added, the drive achieves an accuracy of ±2% and extends its bandwidth to 2500 rad/sec. For frames 9 & up, the frequency with feedback is maintained at ±5%.

Advanced Communication and Integration

The PowerFlex 700S drives are equipped with support for a long range of communication protocols. This important feature allows these drives to integrate seamlessly with modern industrial networks. These drives come with an RS-232 port and multiple optional daughter cards compatible with the FlexLogix controller. A virtual backplane concept makes the programs portable across Logix platforms and simplifies integration into NetLinx architecture. It also facilitates direct drive communication. There are multiple optional adapters for internal communication. These adapters improve control efficiency and data exchange with host controllers through popular interfaces such as DeviceNet, Interbus, Remote I/O, ControlNet, Profibus, Serial Communications, and other networks.

Compliance with various industry standards

PowerFlex 700s comply with codes and standards for industrial safety, reliability, and performance. Some of these standards are:

  • IEC 61800-2 standard covers the general requirements for adjustable speed electrical power drive systems.
  • IEC 61800-5-1 ensures the safety requirements for adjustable speed electrical power drive systems are met.
  • NFPA 70 (also known as the US National Electric Code) is a set of regulations governing the safe installation of wiring and other equipment in the United States.
  • NEMA 250 specifies the requirements for enclosures for electrical equipment with respect to environmental conditions.

While all frames adhere to IEC 61800-2, IEC 61800-5-1, and NFPA 70, frames 1-6 also include compliance with the NEMA 250 standard for electrical equipment enclosures.

Enhanced Performance

The PowerFlex 700S drives incorporate several advanced features and innovations that set them apart in industrial automation.

Advanced Motor Control Algorithms

The PowerFlex 700S drives integrate multiple high-performance algorithms for motor control, like Flux Vector Control with patented FORCE Technology. This technology allows sensor and sensorless operation and control of the Brushless Permanent Magnet and induction motors.

Feedback Options

The drive supports a number of feedback options for enhanced accuracy in terms of speed and position regulation:

  • Standard (and optional) incremental encoders
  • Resolver
  • High-resolution encoder feedback interface cards
  • Temposonics and Stalh SSI interfaces for linear feedback devices

SynchLink for Drive-to-Drive Communication

SynchLink enables high-speed drive-to-drive communication. The feature supports synchronized transmission of application data via a fiber optic link and facilitates precise coordination of multiple drives.

Digital Current Regulator

The digital current provides better performance in terms of drift, speed, and repeatability than its older analog counterpart.

Negative Feed Forward

Negative feedforward minimizes or curbs the overshoot during step speed variations, preventing backup during stoppages.

Integral Position Loop

There is an integral position loop for DriveLogix Motion that governs point-to-point indexing and enhances precise control. This ensures exceptional control of simple indexing and electronic line shafts.

Edge-to-Edge Algorithms

Averaging pulse position and edge-to-edge advanced algorithms are designed to provide extremely accurate speed measurements, even at very low speeds.

Servo Locks

Servo Lock compensates for the step loads’ lost position in the speed regulator, enhancing performance for applications that require drawing.

Inertia Adaptation

Inertia adaptation stabilizes inertia disconnects, which may be caused by the gearboxes or flexible couplings, and compensates broadband resonance by improving the speed regulator bandwidth by fourfold.

High-Speed Analog and Digital I/O

Analog and Digital I/O are high-speed, take 0.5 mSec or even less, and have quick response and capture for position data and registration information. Supplying the output relays and optically and differentially isolated I/Os enhances operational reliability.

Enhanced Process Loop

The enhanced process loop is greatly more efficient than previous loops, taking six times less time for similar tasks. This improves the dynamic response in the application of tension control.

Synchronized Control Loops

The control loops within the drives and all drives on the SuynchLink take a microsecond to synchronize. This leads to excellent coordination and tracking for critical applications.

Enhanced Bus Regulator

The bus regulator is four times quicker than previous products, and it can very quickly stop with overvoltage issues. This makes the drive suitable for regenerative applications.

Conclusion

PowerFlex700S drives are engineered for advanced precision control and high-performance applications that demand high-speed processing and energy efficiency, especially in complex automation systems. A wide range of communication options and compliance with various industry codes and standards ensure that these drives are reliable and flexible for modern industrial applications. Compared to previous drives, the PowerFlex 700S drives can achieve superior control, energy savings, and seamless network integration within the existing systems.
