Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), also referred to as Variable Speed Drives (VSDs) or Adjustable Frequency Drives (AFDs), are electronic devices that regulate the speed and torque of AC induction motors. This control is achieved by adjusting the power supply’s electrical frequency or voltage regulation. VFDS are used in applications ranging from small appliances to various industrial applications such as pumps, conveyors, compressors, and even HVAC systems.

PowerFlex 40P drives:

PowerFlex 40P is a product line of AC drives manufactured by Rockwell Automation used for variable speed control of three-phase motors. The product caters to users seeking closed-loop control with an optional Category 3 Safe Torque Off feature and offers a compact and cost-efficient design. Moreover, it shares common options and accessories with the PowerFlex 40, making it more versatile.

Core Features of the PowerFlex 40P

The PowerFlex 40P comes with adaptable power options across different voltage ranges. This series offers

  • 200-240VAC Drives with power outputs from 0.4-7.5kW(0.5-10HP) and current ratings of 2.3-33 Amps.
  • 380-480VAC Drives with the power ranges between 0.4-11kW (0.5-15HP) and current ratings between 1.4-24Amps.
  • Higher voltages between 500-600 VAC, with power options extending from 0.75-11kW(1-15HP) and current ratings of 1.7-19Amps.

Apart from power ratings, this series offers a list of features.

Mounting Options and Packaging

  • The drives come with options such as NEMA 1/IP30 or NEMA 4/IP66 using the plate or flange drives.
  • Plate drives reduce the overall enclosure size and 75% decrease in enclosed Watts.
  • The DIN rail mounting feature is available on B frame drives, which makes installation easy.
  • An optional IP30 (NEMA 1) conduit box with the standard IP20 (NEMA Type Open) product is integrated to improve environmental ratings and protection.

Optimised Performance

  • Removable MOV to ground, offering trouble-free operation on ungrounded distribution systems.
  • Relay pre-charge mechanism limits inrush currents.
  • Integral brake transistor for the dynamic braking capability.
  • DIP switch settable 24V DC sink or source control enhances control wiring flexibility.
  • The drive can bear 150% overload for a minute and an overload of 200% for 3 seconds.

Sensorless Vector Control

  • Autotune feature that adapts the drive to individual motor characteristics.
  • Closed-loop configuration with encoder feedback improves speed range and regulation.

Control Performance

  • Control capabilities include V/Hz Motor Control and Sensorless Vector Control with Autotune feature for high torque across a wide speed range.
  • Integral PID functionality that enhances application flexibility.
  • Offers position control regulator mode.

Input/Output Features

  • Two semi-programmable inputs dedicated to start and stop functions to simplify wiring and troubleshooting. Additionally, five fully programmable digital inputs provide extensive application flexibility.
  • One programmable form C relay output with two opto outputs for monitoring various drive or motor status.
  • DIP switch-selectable analog output, which may be configured as voltage (0-10V) or current (0-20 mA). An isolated analog input, selectable for voltage or current, improves zero-cross performance in bipolar mode.

Communication Features

  • The drives come with integral communication cards such as DeviceNet, PROFIBUS DP, LonWorks, EtherNet/IP, and ControlNet.
  • The DSI Wireless Interface Module (also called WIM) allows wireless communication between compatible devices with Bluetooth technology and Allen-Bradley products supporting the DSI protocol.
  • RSNetWorx facilitates easy setup on a network by enabling online EDS file creation.

Communication Options

  • Compatible with devices acting as an RTU Master or supporting the standard 03, 06, and 16 RTU commands.
  • Availability of various communication cards, including ControlNet, DeviceNet, EtherNet/IP, LonWorks, and PROFIBUS DP.
  • Integral RS485 communications enable multi-drop network configurations, while a serial converter module (SCM) can connect controllers to a DF1 port.

Advanced Features of the PowerFlex 40P drives

Closed Loop Control

A configurable closed-loop control improves speed regulation and basic position control for motor control through speed and position feedback.

Basic Position Control

There are two aspects to the basic position control.

  • The Local Position Control positions the regulator with Step Logics, which has eight positions in local logic and infinite in external logic.
  • The Outer Position Control Loop uses the analog input bipolar mode to enhance zero-cross performance and simple motion control. The speed reference is supplied to the drive through an analog input or multiple field bus network options. The Speed ratio is also available for simple drawing applications

Feedback Options

The drive supports line driver-type encoders with quadrature or single-channel configuration, 5V/12V/24Vdc voltage option with auto-detection, and frequency-controlled PWM within an allowable frequency range of 0-250kHz.

Ride-Through Capability

A selectable 1/2 DC Bus operation can provide a continued drive output during low-voltage conditions, with better inertia ride-through and low-voltage mitigation.

Optimised for Common DC Bus Installations

The drive’s design is optimized for Common/Shared DC bus setups for better energy absorption, improving efficiency and cost.

  • Configurable pre-charge control via digital inputs.
  • Direct power terminal blocks connections to the DC bus.

Safety with DriveGuard Safe-off Option

The DriveGuard option comes with category 3 Safe-off functionality, which makes it a safe and productive option with zone control and saves cost by reducing the components.

Choosing the Right PowerFlex 40p Drive

The PowerFlex 40P series offers a range of drives. Reading the catalog number empowers you to save time and make the correct decision.

Catalog Number: 22D {A} – B {b} 2P3 {C} N {D} 1 {E} 0 {F} 4 {G} AA {H}

  • Position A describes the drive type. For the PowerFlex 40P, the code “22D” occupies this position.
  • Position B describes voltage rating. Code B implies a rating of 3-phase 240Vac, and D and E imply ratings of 480Vac and 600Vac, respectively.
  • Position C describes the current rating. The code may be of form 2P3, which translates (P translates to a decimal point) to 2.3 Amp or 012, which implies a rating of 12 Amp.
  • Position D describes the enclosure type. Code N stands for panel Mount Configuration, F for flange Mount, and H for plate Drive Configuration.
  • Position E gives the HIM version. Code 1 is for fault/display reset, and code 2 is for plate configuration.
  • Positions F and G describe the EMC filter and version. The codes used in these positions will be 0 (since there is no EMC filter) and 4 (standard version), respectively.
  • Position H: AA through ZZ for custom firmware.
