Enclosure Ratings for PowerFlex 750 Series

It’s critical to pick the correct enclosure ratings for your drive since you don’t want your system to go down or production to be affected if your drive fails.
Enclosures for drives are evaluated according to their compatibility for specific applications and how well they shield equipment. A number is assigned to each type of enclosure depending on its capacity to bear up environmental factors. For this drive’s series, enclosures have Ingress Protection (IP), NEMA, and UL Type classifications.

IP Ratings: IP code refers to the degree of protection provided by drive enclosures against the intrusion of external objects such as fingers, dirt, tools, and water.
The first digit of the IP code represents the enclosure’s measure of protection against solid foreign objects, such as tools or fingers. That may be dangerous if these foreign can get to interact with electrical conductors or wires or mechanical parts, as well as atmospheric dirt and dust, which might harm electronics. The second digit specifies how the equipment within the enclosure is protected from various types of moisture such as drips, sprays, submersion, etc.
Following IP enclosure ratings are available for PowerFlex 750 drive series.
IP00: A drive’s enclosure with an IP54 rating does not protect the drive against touch, invasion of solids, and water.

IP66: IP66 enclosure protects the drive completely against contact with objects as well as dust infiltration. It also offers excellent protection from intense water jets. The IP enclosure ratings only indicate the protection level of internal electronics or components of the drive. NEMA open enclosure: An enclosure featuring ventilation openings that allow external cooling air to circulate over and across the drive components.
NEMA 1 Rating: NEMA 1 enclosure is the most fundamental type. It is solely meant for indoor usage. This enclosure offers protection to personnel against dangerous parts and internal parts against solid foreign objects.
NEMA 12 Rating: NEMA 12 rated enclosures are general-purpose enclosures with a higher level of protection. It is designed for indoor usage only. It protects the drive against falling dirt, circulation dust, fur, filaments, and flyings. It protects the drive against drip and a mild splash of water.
NEMA 4X Rating: NEMA 4X enclosures are identical to NEMA Type 4 enclosures but provide extra corrosion protection. It is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. It protects the drive from windblown dust, rainfall, snowfall, sleet, water splashing, and hose spray. It also protects the drive against corrosion.
UL Type Classification:
A UL rating is essentially an IP or NEMA rating that’s been tested and validated to conform with the relevant standards by UL’s independent safety experts.
UL Open Type enclosures: These drives don’t have a lot of protection in the form of an enclosure.
UL Type 1 Enclosure: It is suited for indoor usage and offers only basic protection from the environment. It is considered to be finger-safe and also protects against falling dirt.
UL Type 12 Enclosure: It is recommended for indoor usage. But it improves the drive’s protection so that it may be used in environments with dust, non-conductive and non-flammable particles. It also protects the drive against non-corrosive liquid, dripping and mild splashing of liquid, as well as spillage of non-corrosive lubricants or coolants.
UL Type 4X Enclosure: This enclosure is used both indoors and outdoors. It protects the drive against rain, airborne dust, jet water, splashing water, caustic chemical corrosion, and exterior ice formation damage.
This enclosure is typically employed in areas that are frequently exposed to large volumes of water. Dairies, ship ports, and breweries are examples of such locations.
Enclosure Codes with Description:
Each drive from PowerFlex 750 series comes with a specific catalog number. Character at the 6th position of the catalog number indicates the enclosure code of the relevant drive.
Any drive from the PowerFlex 750 series can have any of the following enclosure codes.
Enclosure Type R: This enclosure comes with a front side rating of IP20, NEMA open type, and UL open type. Its backside or heat sink rating is IP20, UL open type, and NEMA open type. This enclosure has a pollution degree rating of 1. Enclosure type R drives have frame size 1. This enclosure is suitable for locations with a surrounding air temperature range of 0 degrees Celsius to 50 degrees Celsius.
It is 4.33 inches wide, 15.77 inches long, and 8.31 inches deep. A NEMA Type 1 accessory kit can be used with this enclosure type to enhance the protection level to IP20, NEMA Type 1, and UL Type.
Enclosure Type F: This enclosure has an IP20 rated, NEMA open type, and UL open type front side enclosure. It has a backside or heat sink of IP 20 rating, a UL type 4X, and a NEMA 4X rating with pollution degrees of 1, 2, 3, and 4. It is only provided for drives with frame sizes ranging from 2 to 5. This enclosure is appropriate for places with ambient air temperatures ranging from 0 to 40 degrees Celsius.
It is a flange enclosure. The enclosure for a size 2 drive measures 8.12 inches in width, 18.97 inches in length, and 8.35 inches in depth. This enclosure has dimensions 7.48 inches x 17.87 inches x 8.35 inches for frame size 3, 8.74 inches x 18.66 inches x 8.35 inches for frame size 4, and 10.63 inches x 21.65 inches x 8.35 inches for frame size 5.
Enclosure Type G: Drive with enclosure type G enclosure can have frame sizes ranging from 2 to 7. This enclosure is rated for IP54 and NEMA 12. It is classified as UL Type 12 drive. This wall-mount enclosure allows the drive to operate in locations, having 0 degrees Celsius to 40 degrees of air temperature.
Dimensions of enclosure type G are 8.48 inches x 21.39 inches x 8.75 inches for frame 2, 10.55 inches x 21.69 inches x 8.67 inches for frame 3, 11.81 inches x 22.48 inches x 8.67 inches for frame 4, 13.70 inches x 25.47 inches x 8.67 inches for frame 5, 23.99 inches x 51.11 inches x 18.30 inches for frame 6 and 24.00 inches x 63.54 inches x 18.30 inches.
Enclosure Type N: Drive with enclosure type N enclosure can have a frame size of 2 to 7. This enclosure is IP 20, NEMA Open Type, and UL Open Type rated for frame sizes 2 to 5. This enclosure is IP00, NEMA, and UL Open Type rated for frame sizes 5 and 6. This enclosure has an operating temperature range of 0 degrees Celsius to 50 degrees Celsius.
You can install NEMA /UL Type 1 kit in frames size of 0 to 5 of enclosure type N to increase the level of protection to IP20, NEMA 1, and UL Type 1. For Enclosure Type N with frame sizes 6 and 7, a NEMA type 4X Flange kit is installed to achieve IP00 /NEMA 1 /UL Type 1 front side enclosure rating and IP66 /NEMA 4X / UL Type 4X backside enclosure rating.
Enclosure type N has dimensions 5.30 inches x 16.70 inches x 8.35 inches for frame 2, 7.48 inches x 17.87 inches x 8.35 inches for frame 3, 8.74 inches x 18.66 inches x 8.35 inches for frame 4, 9.37 inches x 21.65 inches x 8.35 inches for frame 5, 12.13 inches x 26.20 inches x 18.20 inches for frame 6 and 16.93 inches x 34.70 inches x 13.76 inches for frame 7.
Enclosure Type B: Enclosure Type B is IP20, NEMA 1, and UL Type 1 rated. It has a frame size of 8 to 10. It has 0 to 40 degrees Celsius operating temperature. For frame 8, it is inside an MCC-style cabinet with a depth of 23.6 inches. It can have an optional hood and HIM, power wiring, and control conduit plates.
Enclosure Type J: Enclosure Type J has an IP54 rating. It is a UL Type 12 enclosure. It comes with a frame size ranging from 8 to 10. It has an operating temperature range of 0 to 40 degrees Celsius. It can be installed inside a 3.15 inches deep MCC-style cabinet. It has an optional HIM, power wiring, and control conduit plates.
Enclosure Type K and Enclosure Type Y: Type K and Type Y enclosures have IP54 and a NEMA 12 rating. They have an 8 to 10 frame size. Their functioning temperature ranges from 0 to 40 degrees Celsius. They can be installed in an MCC-style cabinet with a 3.15 inches depth. They have an HIM, power wiring, and control conduit plates as options. These enclosures have 1, 2, 3, and 4 pollution degree ratings.
Enclosure Type L, Enclosure Type P, Enclosure Type W: Type L, Type P, and Type W enclosures have IP20 and a NEMA 1 rating. These are UL type 1 enclosures. They come in 8 to 10 frame sizes. Their operational temperature ranges from 0 to 40 degrees Celsius. They are inside an MCC-style cabinet with an 800 millimeters depth. They come with wiring bays and power options. These enclosures have a pollution degree rating of 1 and 2.
Enclosure Type T: Enclosure Type T has an IP00 rating. It is a UL Open type enclosure. It comes with a frame size of 8 to 10. It can work in temperatures of 0 to 65 degrees Celsius. For frame size 8, this open-style enclosure has DC input. For frame sizes 9 and 10, you can choose an enclosure with DC or AC input option.
To choose the best drive for your application, follow these steps:
- Choose the nature of your system (AC or DC)
- Evaluate the electrical characteristics of your system
- Take into the surroundings (temperature, dust, water, etc) in which you are going to install your system
- Choose IP rating, NEMA ratings, and UL type according to step 2
- Now, choose a drive keeping into consideration both power and environmental conditions
- Most environmental requirements are met by the already installed drive’s enclosure. But you can increase the degree of protection against harsh environments by installing additional NEMA kits as mentioned above.
