ControlLogix System Selection Guide

1.       ControlLogix Family

The Allen-Bradley Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) are classified as for large, small, and micro-control system. The ControlLogix PLC series uses powerful processors to provide high performance for large control system. 

  • In the late 90s, the ControlLogix PLC was first introduced to the market.
  • This ControlLogix series was a rack based platform, kept the major advantage of the fastest PLC.
  • Rockwell began to use meaningful tag addressing instead of direct addressing on the platform.
  • The 5550 with L1 processers are included in the First ControlLogix platform.
  • Due to technological improvements in memory capacity and processing speed, the First ControlLogix favored the 5560 and L60 processor.
  • The ControlLogix 5570 with improved speed and more memory to replace the 5560.  Also the Armor ControlLogix controller is introduced in 5570 production line to extend the standard ControlLogix platform for dust and wash-down protection.
  • For new project design, Rockwell Automation recommends first considering ControlLogix 5580 and L80 processors with easy configuration and cost efficiencies.
  • GuardLogix controllers are introduced in the ControlLogix system to provide safety control.  
  • The ControlLogix kept the USB port on the processor module for programming and configuration.
  • The fiber optical SERCOS and EtherNet provide the high dynamic accurate servo control.

2.    ControlLogix System Overview

In order to provide process, motion, drives, discretion, and safety control, the ControlLogix system is modular with I/O module and communication in small package. Below shows different system structure per different applications.

2.1.       Simple ControlLogix System

    A simple ControlLogix system can be built with a standard power supply, a standard controller and I/O modules on single chassis.

    The standard power supply is directly mounted on the left end of the chassis to provide power directly to the chassis backplane.

2.2.       Comprehensive ControlLogix System

    A comprehensive system can be composed of multiple processors in one 1756-Ax chassis, or of multiple controllers connected crossover a network, or of I/O modules in different locations. Within the system, the information and data can be shared within.

2.3.       Conformal Coating ControlLogix System

In order to protect against humidity and contaminations in harsh and corrosive environment, ControlLogix product is coated with conformal coating. A conformal coating product has a ‘K’ suffix at the end of the catalog number, such as 1756-L81EK. Conformal coasting products meet or exceed below requirements:

  • ANSI/ISA 71.04.2013 G3 Environment
  • IEC 61086-3-1 Class 2
  • IPC-CC-830
  • MIL-I-46058C
  • EN60068-2-52 salt mist test, severity level 3

2.4.       ControlLogix-XT System

    ControlLogix-XT (Extended Temperature) controller has the same functions as the same standard ControlLogix controller with an extended temperature range from -13 to +158ºF (-25 to +70ºC). The ControlLogix-XT products also are conformally coasted to extended product life in hash, corrosive environments.

     ControlLogix-XT products have a ‘XT’ suffix at the end of the catalog number, such as 1756-A10XT and 1756-A7XT for chassis, and 1756-PAXT, 1756-PA30XT, 1756-PBXT, and 1756-PB30XT for power supply, 1756-L73XT for the controller.

2.5.       Redundant ControlLogix System

    The redundant control system can be only configured from the ControlLogix 5570 controllers. A redundant ControlLogix 5570 controller system includes these components:

  • Two 1756 chassis can be configured with:
  • Same number of slots
  • Same module in same slots
  • Same firmware revision in each module
  • One 1756-RM2 or 1756-RM2XT module per chassis
  • One or two ControlLogix 5570 or ControlLogix-XT controllers
  • One or two 1756-RMCx cables
  • A redundant ControlLogix 5570 controller connects the 1715 redundant I/O system through an EtherNet/IP network configuration by using the 1756-EN2TR communication module.

2.6.       GuardLogix Safety System

    The GuardLogix system consists of the primary controller and safety partner controller. User only needs to configure and program the primary controller, the safety partner controller is automatically configured.

                Both the SIL3 of IEC 61503 and (PLe/Cat.4) of ISO 13849-1 safety standards are meet by the GuardLogix controller system.

2.7.       Armor ControlLogix and Armor GuardLogix System

    While offering Ingress Protection (IP67), wash-down protection for immersion between 15cm to 1m (5.91 in – 393.70 in) in harsh environments, global certifications, and ratings, the Armor standard controller and safety controller support the same temperature range of the standard controller and safety controller.

3.     Redundant Power Supplies

    A redundant power supply is a dual-power solution to provide a backup power through the chassis adapter to the series B chassis backplane.

4.    Accesories

 

4.1.       Memory Cards   

    The Memory cards 1784-SD1(1GB memory) and 1784ED2(2GB memory) provide nonvolatile memory to store a user program and tag information on a processor module. The memory card is located on the front of the processor module. In order to avoid accidently erase or load tag information from nonvolatile memory or load controller from a nonvolatile memory during start-up, user can manually enable or disable the option from the property of the controller.

4.2    Energy Storage Modules

    By replacing a battery, an energy storage module uses a capacitor to store energy to supply the stand-by power to ControlLogix 5570 controller system. The 1756-ESMCAP energy storage module (ESM) is removable on front of the ControlLogix 5570 processor module and related GuardLogix controller.1756-ESMNCAPXT, energy storage module, is installed on the ControlLogix-XT, extreme temperature controller. Energy storage module is not available for ControlLogix 5580 controllers.

4.3   Slot Filler

    Use a slot filler to fill an unused slot. 1756-N2 slot filler is for standard ControlLogix chassis, and 1756-N2XT slot filler is for ControlLogix-XT chassis.
